Youth Day Classic Basketball tournament dribbles in for its fifth edition

The City of Cape Town is partnering with African Grassroot Hoops for the Youth Day Classic Basketball Tournament to commemorate Youth month.

The fifth edition of The Youth Day Classic Basketball tournament looks to be a slam dunk, with 18 U/19 teams showcasing more than 800 young talent at the German International School on 21 and 22 June 2025.

The tournament aims to create safe spaces where youth from local communities can access top level sports.

Teams from Gugulethu, Cross Roads, Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Langa, Heideveld,  Mitchells Plain, and Rondebosch will battle it out on the courts over the two days.

Facing off against squads from across the rest of the country, this competition is the ultimate stage for these young players to showcase their skills, with scouts on the lookout for talent ready to take on major varsity leagues and even international opportunities.

‘African Grassroot Hoops is dedicated to promoting basketball in the greater Cape Town areas, and also uses the sport as a platform for nurturing young talent into future stars. This tournament goes beyond basketball, offering mentorship from motivational speakers and basketball experts. The City is proud to be associated with an initiative that not just celebrates the game of basketball, but the resilience, potential, and hope that our youth represent. We encourage residents to show up in their numbers to create a vibrant atmosphere as the next generation of hoopers showcasing their talent,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Games on both days will start at 09:00 and end at 18:00.

Tickets for spectators start at R100 for adults and R25 for kids. Tickets available through Quicket.
